It had been six years since John Patitucci’s last release as a leader, but this, his first for his own label Three Faces Records, was certainly worth the wait. Introducing his Electric Guitar Quartet, with guitarists Adam Rogers and Steve Cardenas, and his long standing rhythm section partner from the Wayne Shorter Quartet, Brian Blade, Brooklyn explores the many influences that Patitucci absorbed while growing up in the East Flatbush area of the New York borough. As fans might expect, Patitucci shines throughout this record not just as a dazzling bassist, but also as a natural arranger. Delicate contrapuntal melodies intertwine between his bass and the guitars, while both guitarists have ample room to stretch out. Favouring his semi-acoustic, six-string Yamaha, Patitucci also enjoys the freedom to showcase himself as a virtuoso soloist. Yet, his ultimate skill lies in putting the music first and his individual talents second.
